Synthesis

Synthesis was the brainchild of Daniel Mackisack. The classes were intended to provided a brief introduction into topics usually covered at university level which are interesting and topical. They were also designed to be accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. The 2009 trial started in October 2009 and ran for 7 weeks.

The format consisted of short lectures, video materials from Stanford and MIT universities, simulations, simple experiments and group discussion.

Physics topics included:

Week 1 – The Laws of Physics – Tristan O’Hanlon
Week 2 – Einstein’s Theory of Relativity – Tristan O’Hanlon
Week 3 – From Classical Mechanics to Quantum Mechanics – Tristan O’Hanlon
Week 4 – Nuclear Physics – Tristan O’Hanlon
Week 5 – Electricity and Magnetism – Tristan O’Hanlon
Week 6 – Physics of the Atmosphere – Tristan O’Hanlon
Week 7 – Astrophysics and Cosmology – Samuel Crookes

Philosophy topics included:

Liberty – Daniel Mackisack
